On February 21st from 9am – 12pm Weiss Woods of Plum Creek Syrup will be participating in the the 3rd annual Maplefest at Tattersall Distilling River Falls WI. It's going to be different this year since they have added judging by maple syrup experts in addition to the customer judging. We will be participating in the Amber and Dark categories.
Judging Criteria for maple syrup (non-flavored)
Judges will arrive around 9am and will be given a sample of each of your syrups which will be given a number to keep the vendor samples anonymous. Each will be given a score card for them to fill out. Scores will be tallied and winners announced around 11am.
1. ClarityClarity refers to how transparent the syrup appears. High-quality maple syrup is typically clear, free of cloudiness or visible sediment. Proper clarity is achieved through careful filtration while preserving the syrup’s natural essence.
2. DensityDensity evaluates the syrup’s consistency. Proper density ensures the syrup is neither too thick nor too watery. High-quality syrup should pour smoothly and evenly, reflecting correct sugar concentration and careful production.
3. FlavorFlavor is the most subjective yet vital criterion and represents the overall maple character and balance of the syrup. Judges may consider flavor profiles aligned with standard maple grades, including:
Golden with Delicate Taste: Light, mild flavor with subtle sweetness
Amber with Rich Taste: Smooth, full-bodied maple flavor
Dark with Robust Taste: Strong, pronounced maple flavor
Very Dark with Strong or Intense Taste: Bold, intense flavor with deep, rich maple notes
Each syrup will be judged through a blind tasting process to ensure fairness and impartiality.
Maple Syrup, cream, candy and sugar will be available for sale from out booth. Hope to see you there.
